Art Events at LBCC

Paintings of Corvallis frat houses with bold red Greek letters spelling "RAPE" across their facades. Pages ripped from notebooks with drawings dancing across them. Little bits of paper torn apart to build images inside a frame. These are just a few of the things you'll find when you step into the South Santiam Hall Gallery in South Santiam Hall.

It features a collaborative show of three LBCC student artists, Michael Bosch, Elizabeth Gleason, and James-Harley Parr. The gallery is titled "Kapakahi". It's a Hawaiian word that means, "When things are a mess or mixed up together.", said Anne Magratten, mentor for student gallery coordinators.

"Gender fluidity, sexual violence, humor, dark", said Magratten when asked what the theme of the show is. Artist Michael Bosch said he's "trying to shed light on an issue that is profoundly hurting people, who are traditionally voiceless.", with his frat house paintings. The reception will take place in the South Santiam Hall Gallery from 3:30pm to 4:30pm on Thursday, Jan. 25. Each of the three artists will be speaking during the reception. Find out more about South Santiam Hall Gallery at their website.

Across the way in the North Santiam Hall Gallery, there is another show up on display. Titled "Esteem: Artists and Mentors", this collaborative gallery will showcase pairs of arts. One piece from the artist themselves and one piece from an artist that mentored them. "There are 34 artworks up," said Sin Melendez, student gallery coordinator. The arts cover a range of different mediums from sculpture to paintings, video and more. Each pair will also have a statement from the artist to go along with the pairs of arts. The reception for this gallery will take place on the second floor of NSH on Wednesday, Jan. 31 from 1pm to 2pm. Find out more about the North Santiam Hall Gallery at their website.

At College Center Gallery a.k.a. The Calapooia Gallery, you can find the "A New Reality" gallery on display. The creator of these pieces is LBCC student Christina Royce. Her work features electrifying neon colors making up photos and oil pastel drawings of landscapes, real and imagined. The reception for this show will be Thursday, Feb. 8th from 3pm to 4pm. Find out more about the College Center/ Calapooia Gallery at their website.

Do you make art or do photography and ever wanted to see your work in a gallery? The annual student juried art show is a great opportunity to get your work displayed in a gallery. "I'd like to call to attention that the Juried student art show is fast approaching meaning anyone who would like to enter should start brainstorming now and working on thier masterpieces.," said Melendez. Submissions are open to current LBCC students and can tentatively be submitted the first week of spring term at the gallery coordinator's office at NSH 111. More details to come soon.
